CT Review: I Visited Shenoy’s In Mumbai And Savoured Authentic GSB And Konkani Flavours

On a quaint street in Worli, Shenoy’s in Mumbai is hidden in plain sight. “Since 1967,” as claimed on the signage, the establishment has recently been revamped into a chic modern space. But don’t let the modern ambiance fool you! The vibrant flavours of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin cuisine will quickly tell you that the new space still packs its old flavourful soul.

Shenoy’s In Mumbai Is An Ode To GSB Cuisine

Lushly designed and incorporating chic modern aesthetics, Shenoy’s revamped space is cosy but not in a way that makes you feel claustrophobic. The lighting was warm enough to make it an excellent date spot, while the long tables welcomed large gatherings with open arms.

I was excited for a journey of the Konkan coast and GSB cuisine, and along with me was my mother, whose love for seafood is as big as the ocean from which it’s sourced.

The Past On A Plate!

The list of items we tried at Shenoy’s was not extensive, yet it managed to leave a lasting impression.

We started with the Devasthana Saar. This mind-blowing soup was an explosion of flavour. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a soup served in a French Press and a tiny cup and saucer. It was sweet, it was spicy, it had the perfect tamarind tang, and was all-around delicious! The perfect way to kickstart the meal!

The two beverages that we decided to order were the Panakam and the Kokum Masala Soda. The Panakam was a light, ginger-y drink that was just the perfect amount of sweet. The Kokum Masala Soda, on the other hand, was a sweet and tangy delight! Both of the beverages were the perfect pairing for the meal.

The first item we were served was the Peri Peri Kela Bhajji. Believe me when I tell you that nothing could have prepared me for the vibrancy of the spices in this bhajiya! The long banana slices were fried to perfection and coated with a layer of spices. Forget potato fries — I want to be munching on this from now on!

Next, we tried the Palak Patte Ki Chaat. This was a light snack full of sweet, tangy, and savoury flavours that I could easily clear entire bowls of!

The Gojju Chicken Malabari Disks came next. Looking at it, you may think that they’re a greener, fancier version of Sev Puri. However, one bite of this, and you’ll realise how wrong your initial estimation was. It’s a spicy chicken dish with a tamarind-y chutney that will haunt your dreams for days to come.

We then got two types of fish curry, Alleppey Fish Curry and Goan Fish Curry. We decided to pair them with zeera rice, which was quite a delicious combination. The curries were vibrant and delicious.

We then ordered a Raja Phanna Upkari. This is a thali that comes with an Upkari – a type of gravy, Ukda rice, rice bhakri, Kokum saar, Dal, and pickle. Since we’d already had fish, the gravy we got was prawns. When compared to the other more vibrant flavours we’d relished that day, the upkari paled a bit. Still, all the elements combined to make a delicious thali that is worth trying.

Lastly, for dessert, we decided to try the Black Sesame Creme Brulee. I’ve been hooked on black sesame desserts for a while now, and this creme brulee came to me at the correct time. It was nutty and chocolaty in a way that sesame desserts often happen to be, and I loved every bite!

Final Thoughts

Shenoy’s was one of the biggest surprises I managed to encounter in my reviews. Don’t let the unassuming building fool you. It houses one of the most vibrant culinary havens offering some of the most tantalising dishes ever! Definitely worth visiting again and again and yet again!
