An unfortunate incident took place on Tuesday in Machu Picchu. Two trains reportedly collided, killing one conductor and leaving at least 40 people injured. The crash occurred between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes. Officials are still working to process the identities of those injured. Here is what we know so far.
Train Collision On Single Track Leaves One Dead In Machu Picchu
According to a report by WION, the two trains collided head-on on a single-track line. The crash killed the conductor of one of the trains and left around 40 passengers injured. The deceased was identified as Roberto Cardenas Loay, according to the Cusco prosecutor’s office. Reportedly, a PeruRail-operated train collided with one belonging to Inca Rail around lunchtime. Rescue teams rushed to the site after authorities were alerted. The exact cause of the accident is still unknown.
According to AFP, injured passengers were seen lying beside the railway tracks, while the two damaged locomotives stood nearby. Dozens of ambulances and medical personnel reached the scene to treat the injured. At least 20 passengers are reported to be in serious condition. They are currently undergoing treatment.

Injured Passengers Shifted To Hospitals
As per a report by the BBC, the injured were immediately transferred to medical facilities in the nearby city of Cusco. The US Embassy in Peru confirmed that US citizens were among those injured. Police are still working to identify them. According to a report by The Guardian, authorities have suspended services along the railway line connecting Machu Picchu with the city of Cusco following the accident.
PeruRail issued an official statement addressing the incident. The officials stated that they deeply regretted what happened and helped manage the situation on site. Immediate first aid was provided to the train driver, the conductor, and the passengers involved in the accident.
Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel located at an elevation of around 8,200 feet. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Peru. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts an average of 4,500 visitors every day.
