A sudden flash flood ripped through Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park, leaving around 20 people missing and turning parts of the iconic tourist destination in the USA into a scene of destruction. The flooding hit the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch area on Saturday afternoon, sweeping away footbridges, structures and huge boulders as rescue teams rushed to evacuate visitors.

The National Park Service (NPS) has appealed for information about hikers, campers and visitors who may have been in the affected areas when the flash flood struck. According to CNN US, at least 62 people have been evacuated so far, while search and rescue operations continue.

Visuals on social media show powerful currents carrying rocks, mud and debris through the canyon, with parts of the infrastructure being washed downstream. Nearly all footbridges across Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, cutting off pedestrian access through parts of the canyon.
The flooding also damaged the Transcanyon Waterline, a crucial system that supplies water to the park. With the pipeline currently out of operation, officials have asked people to conserve water as the park relies on limited reserves.

According to NDTV, the flash flooding in the Grand Canyon followed intense rainfall in the area. Weather officials said about half an inch to one inch of rain fell in roughly 30 minutes. Because of the canyon’s steep terrain, much of the water ran off almost immediately, creating dangerous and fast-moving currents.
The flooding hit areas around Bright Angel Creek, Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground and the North Kaibab Trail. Phantom Ranch, the campground and several trails and bridges have been closed until further notice as authorities assess the damage and continue rescue efforts.
