Karnataka is now all set to remove a decade-old system. The state will stop fixing the retail price of alcoholic beverages from April 2026. This move has been announced so that liquor manufacturers can get more freedom in setting prices. Scroll down to know what is going to change from April in the state regarding alcoholic drinks.
Karnataka To Stop Fixing Liquor Prices
According to a report by The Times of India, this announcement was made in the 2026-27 state budget recently. The government is all set to scrap its older system of fixing the retail price of liquor so that beer and liquor makers can get more freedom to set prices in Karnataka, which is said to be one of India’s largest alcohol markets.
Reportedly, the government is also set to introduce an Alcohol-In-Beverage (AIB)-based excise duty structure. It will link taxes directly to the alcohol content in drinks. Under this new proposed system, Karnataka’s government will deregulate price fixation. This means that manufacturers will have the flexibility to set the price of the product. They will no longer need the approval of the state government.

New Rules To Be Implemented In Phases
According to a report by The Times of India, the number of pricing slabs will also be reduced to eight from 16. It should be noted that this new change marks one of the most significant changes to Karnataka’s liquor policy in years. The state currently has a controlled pricing regime. Under this, manufacturers declare ex-factory prices before the government fixes the final retail price of any alcoholic beverage.
This new excise framework will be implemented in phases over the next three to four years. It will give the authorities enough time to ensure gradual adjustments in the market. Notably, liquor taxation is a major revenue source for Karnataka. The government has set an excise revenue target of ₹45,000 crore for the 2026-27 budget. Reportedly, the government will also allow distilleries and breweries to conduct tasting sessions and sell products to visiting tourists at their premises. This move is being introduced to promote alcohol tourism in the state.
