No matter your age, rainbows always bring a smile to everyone’s face! Formed when sunlight passes through raindrops, they add magic to the skies. A recent study, based on thousands of rainbow photos shared worldwide, suggests that climate change could make rainbows vanish from some regions in India. Scroll down to know more.
Rainbows To Disappear From Indian Skies?
For this study, scientists collected photos from different parts and trained a computer model to predict rainbow occurrences in India, depending on weather and climate conditions. The test was conducted under three possible future climate scenarios. According to India Today, the new study, published in Global Environmental Change, has discovered that climate change is affecting when and where rainbows appear. The study also revealed that certain parts of India are now witnessing fewer rainbows than in previous years.
Right now, when the weather is suitable to see a rainbow is about 117 days in a year. By the year 2100, because of climate change, that number could go up by 4 to 5% because of greenhouse gas emissions. The rainbow days will be the same everywhere. According to the study, around 21-34% of the world’s land areas are expected to lose rainbow days. In contrast, 66-79% of land areas might gain more rainbow days.

Areas To Get More Rainbow Days
As per The Times of India, colder and mountainous regions, like the Arctic and the Himalayas, are expected to witness a significant rise in rainbow days. Seeing the current climate conditions, they don’t see many rainbows now, but the circumstances will change in future. However, not many people live in these regions. Moreover, the highly populated areas will lose rainbows in the future.
Indeed, rainbows don’t have a direct impact on the economy or nature, but connect emotionally with people. Thus, researchers have highlighted that climate change is not only affecting our daily lives but also reshaping the simple and little joys in our lives.
If climate change and pollution do not improve, we might lose the chance to see rainbows in India even on rainy days.
