Oman: Expats Can Buy Properties Only In Designated Areas And Here’s All About The Rule

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning recently clarified that foreign ownership cannot be opened in all areas in the Sultanate of Oman. Yes, property ownership for foreign expats is available only in limited locations, and they have been specified under existing laws. Oman Clarifies Property Ownership Rules For Expats

Recently, the Ministry in Oman clarified that the recent amendments to the executive regulation of the Foreigners’ Residence Law relate to residency rights. It does not expand property ownership rights for foreign nationals. As clarified by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, non-Omani nationals are restricted to areas that are designated under existing law for ownership. They have further dismissed suggestions which mention how foreigners can purchase property across the country.

Expats Can Own Property In Certain Areas Only

So basically, what the current rule says is that expats can own properties only in designated locations. These locations include integrated tourism complexes, future cities like Al Thuraya City, Sultan Haitham City, and Al Jabal Al Aali. It also includes an integrated residential neighbourhood, such as Surouh. The ministry has mentioned how citizens of GCC countries are going to remain subject to separate GCC agreements. So, the recent amendments in residency do not alter the legal flame framework for foreign ownership.

Oman Extends Compulsory Sick Leave & Extraordinary Leave Insurance

This development comes at a time in Oman has extended compulsory sick leave and extraordinary leave insurance to cover expat workers as well. These are for workers in both public and private sectors and will come into effect from July 20th. This decision has been issued by the social protection fund, and it has been introduced through the SPF decision No. 13/2006. As a result, the move aims to broaden the social protection coverage and extend the benefits to a wider segment of the workforce in the Sultanate.
