If you are someone who travels daily between Sharjah and Dubai, maybe quite frequently if not daily, you are no stranger to delays and traffic. After all, one of the top news pieces early in the morning is about how heavy the traffic is between the two emirates on several major routes. But this is all set to change in a few months. We say this because the first phase of the new Al Taawun Tunnel is scheduled to open soon. As a result, travellers might see some major changes and one of the busiest routes this year.
Al Taawun Tunnel Is Scheduled To Open Soon
The tunnel at Al Taawun Square is being built so that it is a congestion at the major bottleneck on the Sharjah-Dubai corridor. With this project, it is expected to cut the waiting time for motorists by about 85 per cent! However, it is expected that the wider project may be completed in February 2027, as reported by Gulf News, which quoted Al Khaleej newspaper. But the first phase of the Al Taawun Tunnel project is scheduled to open in November of this year.
It Would Improve Traffic On Sharjah-Dubai Route
As revealed by Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority back in July, it mentioned how the construction had reached 20%. The work was continuing around the clock, and this project, once complete, is going to be a major upgrade to the traffic corridor, which connects the emirates. This project involves building an underpass at the Al Taawun Tunnel project. As a result, it would allow vehicles to travel underneath the junction instead of flying across the surface level.
Talking about the tunnel, the report further mentions how it will have three lanes in each direction. So, it has been designed to handle 4,000 vehicles in an hour during peak time. Moreover, it will also offer a direct connection from Al Taawun Street to Al Nahda Bridge and Dubai. This is a part of the wider development that would include the roads connecting towards roads towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street and Emirates Road. With additional capacity expected to improve traffic flow, it would reduce the pressure on the existing surface-level junction.

It Would Make It Easier For Motorists To Travel
Al Taawun, for those who are not aware, is one of the main routes, which is used by motorists to travel between Sharjah and Dubai. The areas include Al Taawun, Al Nahda, and Al Khan, which end up creating high traffic volume. In fact, there are several major roads which converge around the junction. As a result, these end up creating bottlenecks during morning and evening rush hours. And so traffic gets particularly congested between 7 AM and 9 AM and 5 AM and 8 PM.
The main benefit, once the tunnel opens, is that the journey would be faster between the two cities. So, traffic would be allowed to pass underneath the roundabout. Moreover, the development may also improve connectivity between Al Taawun Street, Al Nahda Bridge, Al Corniche Street and surrounding residential communities.
