Why Hill Stations In India Are Not A Refuge From Summer Heat Anymore?

India is reeling under intense heat, and many people are running towards hill stations to get some relief. But this year, the places that used to give respite are also sizzling with record heat. Places like Mussoorie, Manali, Shimla and more are facing scorching temperatures. Here’s more on this.

Hill Stations In India See Heatwave-Like Conditions

The changing weather pattern is making the heatwave feel more intense every day. Every year during harsh summers, many people travel to hill stations for a few days to get respite. But this year, the story is a little different. The places that used to be a refuge from the heat are also facing scorching temperatures. According to India Today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that summer 2026 could be hotter than normal across most of the Himalayan region.

This includes your favourite hill stations like Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie, Nainital, most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, and even higher regions of Uttarakhand. In early March, maximum temperatures across Himachal Pradesh were 8-12°C above normal, with severe heatwave-like conditions. This was the earliest such occurrence in the state in five years.

Popular Hill Stations Are Not A Refuge Anymore

Heatwave and severe heatwave conditions have also been recorded in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, with temperatures 3.1°C to 5°C above normal. According to India Today, the IMD had to declare a yellow alert for heatwave conditions on April 26, 2026, for several districts in Himachal Pradesh. Things are no different for Mussoorie and Nainital. These hill stations, which enjoy popularity as summer escapes, are now facing the heat themselves.

Mussoorie recorded a maximum temperature of 30°C on April 26, which is above its normal range. Nainital is also feeling quite warm these days. Reportedly, heatwave-like conditions are usually seen in May and June, but this year’s early onset of summer has made things worse. According to India Today, the Western Ghats, home to hill stations like Mahabaleshwar, Lonavala and Matheran, have also left tourists sweating.
