At around 8:30 am, the deep depression in the Bay Of Bengal turned into a severe cyclonic storm. Named Cyclone Michaung, it is the fourth tropical cyclone to occur over the Bay Of Bengal. On December 5, at approximately noon, a cyclonic storm is predicted to make landfall close to Bapatla. The wind speed is predicted to reach severe cyclonic levels, with a maximum sustained speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph. Cyclone “Michaung” is predicted to make landfall in Southern Andhra Pradesh and the North Coast of Tamil Nadu tonight. As a result, strong gusts and persistent heavy rain are being experienced throughout Chennai. Significant waterlogging has resulted from the heavy precipitation in certain regions. Suburban train services in all Chennai Suburban sections were temporarily suspended until 8 am on Monday due to the heavy rainfall and waterlogging.
Southern Railways in a statement stated that suburban train services have been temporarily suspended, except the Passenger Specials. Waterlogging problems are present in several city areas, including Maduravoyal, Porur, Saligaramam, and Valasaravakkam. Numerous trees have been uprooted by the severe winds.
Eleven express trains leaving from Chennai Central on Monday were cancelled due to heavy rainfall that caused the water level at Bridge No. 14 between Vyasarpadi and Basin Bridge to approach the danger mark.
Chief Minister MK Stalin advised the people of Tamil Nadu to stay inside until the storm passed. To determine whether the Control Room was prepared to handle the cyclone, the Chief Minister conducted a firsthand inspection.
