Similarly, private sector employees in the UAE will also enjoy a long weekend. They will also be granted the same number of leaves, which is not surprising, as public and private sector employees usually enjoy almost the same number of holidays. This development comes after the UAE confirmed Eid al-Adha would begin on Friday, June 6.

Why Is It Celebrated?

As discussed previously, this is a festival of sacrifice. It commemorates how Prophet Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice his son Ismail when God tested his faith. Just like other religious holidays in the UAE, families and friends gather together to celebrate with a delicious feast and spend time together, reflecting on their faith and sharing precious memories. During the festival, it is customary for the families (who can afford to do so) to slaughter a goat or sheep. After this, they share the meat with the relatives and less privileged people in the society.
