Dr Shriram Nene suggests you include barley water in your summer diet. It’s a means to stay cool, refreshed and hydrated, says the celebrity doctor. He calls it a “timeless summer elixir” known for refreshing and detoxifying the body. And that’s not all! Barley, a major cereal grain that made it to the tables of our ancestors for 9000 years, is known to lower cholesterol as well, especially low-density lipoprotein( LDL) or bad cholesterol.

The best part is that Dr Nene has turned regular barley water into a delicious beverage with his recipe. While I’ve known to consume it warm with a pinch of salt and a dollop of ghee, Dr Nene’s barley water recipe has piqued my interest, just like yours. Let’s get to it.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of water (1 litre)
  • 1/4 cup of  pearl barley
  • Salt
  • Honey
  • Lemon

Method

  • First, boil four cups or one litre of water.
  • Next, add a quarter cup of pearl barley into the vessel.
  • Stir the barley water for 5-10 minutes till the water absorbs all the goodness of the cereal grain.
  • Strain the liquid into a glass.
  • Add a pinch of salt.
  • Drizzle a little honey into it.
  • Squeeze half a lemon.
  • Coat the glass with a lemon rind to make it a tropical drink.
