Delhi Mayor Asks Officers To Shut Down Meat Shops During Navratri

The Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation Mukkesh Suryaan has issued an order for the closure of meat shops during Navratri. People observing Navratri are undergoing fasting for nine days from April 2 to April 11, 2022. Issuing an order on April 4, Suryaan stated that the sale of meat during Navratri might make the devotees uncomfortable and ordered to shut down these shops.

“The Sale Of Meat Will Affect the Sentiments Of Devotees”, Reads The Order

The order from the South Delhi Municipal Corporation reads that devotees go to temples during Navratri and refrain from having non-vegetarian food, onion, garlic, alcohol and also some spices. It adds that the selling of meat during these days will affect the sentiments of the devotees. It also states that devotees have to deal with the four smell of the meat on their way to the temples. The order reads that some meat shops also discard waste in gutters or beside the road. It says that if meat shops are closed, such events can be stopped.

Violators Might Have To Face Fines, Ban On Liquor Requested Too

Suryaan has also said that 99% of households in Delhi refrain from using onion and garlic during Navratri. He said that the order will be implemented and violators will have to face fines. He also wrote to the Chief Minister to remove discounts on liquor during Navratri.

He requested a ban on the sale of liquor for nine days if there is a possibility. The decision of the government has gathered mixed reactions on the internet.
