The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has made it mandatory for restaurants and shops to mention if they sell halal or jhatka meat. The Standing Committee of the NDMC had recently moved the proposal. According to an India Today report, North Delhi Mayor Jai Prakash said, “Restaurants and shops in North Delhi will now have to mandatorily display whether the meat being sold or served is halal or jhatka.” In late January, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) had cleared a similar proposal.

The Shops Have To Put Up Display Boards If They Sell Halal Or Jhatka Meat
North Delhi has a large number of restaurants, small eateries, streetside shops and more selling non-vegeterian food. Lanes of Chandni Chowk and Daryaganj have numerous shops selling non-vegeterian kebabs, tikkis , main course items and more. Now, all the shops in North Delhi selling halal or jhatka have to put up boards mentioning the same. Jhatka is the method of slaying an animal in one go. In the halal method, an animal dies after the cutting of a vein. Many people are not comfortable consuming jhatka or halal meat.
