Travelling between Delhi and Siliguri by train could become much faster in the coming years with the proposed Delhi-Siliguri bullet train corridor. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project to the Railway Ministry, marking an important step towards developing the high-speed rail link. Delhi-Siliguri Bullet Train To Cut Travel Time
The proposed corridor will connect Delhi with Siliguri through major cities, including Varanasi and Patna. Once completed, the high-speed rail service could reduce the Delhi-Siliguri journey to around 6 hours 45 minutes, compared with the roughly 20 to 24 hours taken by existing train services.
The proposed Delhi-Varanasi-Patna-Siliguri high-speed rail corridor is expected to cover around 865 km. Besides providing a faster connection between Delhi and Siliguri, the route will link several important cities across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The project is still at the planning stage. While the submission of the DPR is a key step, the corridor will require further approvals and decisions before construction and implementation can move ahead.

How Much Time Will The Bullet Train Take?
The proposed travel times indicate a significant reduction on several sections of the route:
- Delhi to Siliguri: Around 6 hours 45 minutes, compared with 20 to 24 hours currently.
- Delhi to Patna: Around 4 hours 41 minutes.
- Delhi to Varanasi: Around 3 hours 50 minutes.
- Varanasi to Siliguri: Around 2 hours 55 minutes.
- Patna to Siliguri: Around 2 hours.
The faster rail link could make travel between northern and eastern India more convenient, particularly for passengers travelling between major cities along the proposed route.
Other High-Speed Rail Corridors Planned In India
The Delhi-Siliguri corridor is part of India’s broader plans to expand its high-speed rail network. Seven corridors covering nearly 4,000 km have been identified for future development. These include Delhi-Varanasi, Varanasi-Patna-Siliguri, Chennai-Bengaluru, Bengaluru-Hyderabad, Chennai-Hyderabad, Mumbai-Pune and Pune-Hyderabad.

India’s first high-speed rail project, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, is currently under development. The expansion of the network is expected to improve intercity connectivity and offer faster alternatives for long-distance travel.
