Just like any other year, Delhi is once again making the headlines at this time for its horrible air pollution. The condition is only taking a turn down south and the Air Quality Index is now categorised as ‘severe’. Unfortunately, no improvement in the air quality has been reported in recent times making it hard for Delhites and their health. In view of the air quality, Delhi will be banning the entry of non-Delhi registered commercial cabs in the city.
Some Commercial Cabs To Get Banned In Delhi
Commuters can book cabs from different taxi aggregator apps. Out of all the cab services provided in the national capital, the cabs that are non-Delhi registered will be banned. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said to the media that cabs registered in Delhi will be able to run in Delhi. He further added that a detailed order will also be issued because of the implementation of this step. This is an important step taken to stop the plying of cabs that are not Delhi-registered. The implementation signifies that only cabs registered in the capital city can run and provide services in Delhi.
Further Steps:
The Environment Minister also added that the Delhi government will carry out the odd-even car rationing scheme once the Supreme Court evaluates it and its impact, according to a report by the News On AIR. For this, the government will present two studies to the Supreme Court that focus on representing the positive aspect of the decision.
There are several steps and decisions that are in discussion to control the worsening air quality in Delhi. Gopal Rai conducted a meeting with a team from IIT Kanpur. The primary objective of the meeting was about cloud seeding so that it can lead to artificial rain.

Is There Any Official Announcement Yet?
Some industry sources close to the matter are claiming that they have not received any official directive from the transport department yet. Right now, there is confusion among people regarding the banning of non-Delhi registered commercial cabs in Delhi.
Uber mentioned in a statement, “While we haven’t got such an order from the transport department, we want to restate that all the cabs on this platform in Delhi are electric or CNG. Also, shared mobility helps more people commute in fewer cars.”

If the government bans the cabs of the above-mentioned category, then commuters will be more dependent on private petrol/diesel vehicles. In fact, it will also put further pressure on the existing transportation facilities on the road. More petrol/diesel vehicles on the road is not at all a good sign at the moment, considering the worsening air quality. Most of the app-based aggregator cabs have made a shift to CNG or electric vehicles. So a ban on these vehicles does not seem to be moving in the proper direction. Also, these cabs can help in lessening the traffic jams and congestion of private vehicles.
The city is facing some scary times right now. The intense pollution and unhealthy surroundings are a major concern for everyone. In fact, the air quality in 2023 is worse than in the last decade, according to a report by India Today.
