The National Zoological Park, popularly known as Delhi Zoo, is now planning to bring back zebras and giraffes after more than a decade. This means visitors may soon be able to see these beautiful animals in the newly constructed glass-fronted enclosures. Here’s what we know so far about this development.
Zebras And Giraffes May Return To Delhi Zoo
Visitors to the Delhi Zoo may soon get to see zebras and giraffes again after over a decade. According to ThePrint, the animals are expected to be brought from an African country. The zoo authorities have constructed new specialised, glass-fronted enclosures for them as part of a major modernisation plan.
The striped zebra has been absent from the zoo for nearly 15 years, while giraffes have been missing for around 11 years. Both species are apparently part of the zoo’s current and future animal collection plan. They will be brought to the zoo only after their enclosures are fully ready. The Delhi Zoo currently has 93 species, and the authorities are planning to increase the number to 109.

Officials Plan To Introduce Exotic Animals Too
According to ThePrint, Delhi Zoo used to have zebras and giraffes, but the last zebra sadly passed away on April 30, 2011. The last giraffe, named Ankit, died in 2015 after a heart attack. The zoo also had more than 130 species around 30 years ago. However, the number sharply declined to 93 species and nearly 1,245 animals.
The proposed new collection at the zoo not only includes zebras and giraffes but also cheetahs, New World monkeys and Mouse Deer. The plan aims to bring more species to the zoo and boost footfall. Moreover, the officials are also exploring options to acquire exotic animals in the future. This plan means that tourists and even small children will get to see these animals in real life instead of only in pictures. And yes, the new glass-fronted enclosures will also offer clear views for wildlife enthusiasts, too!
