Delhiite Impressed With Kolkata Metro Ride; Says, “The Stations Are Old But Maintained Well”

Kolkata Metro, known as India’s first operational metro, began its services in 1984. Over the decades, new routes have been constructed for better services. Recently, a Delhiite visited Kolkata and travelled on the iconic metro. How was the experience of travelling on the country’s historical metro? Let’s find out.

Delhiite Shared Experience Of Taking A Ride On Kolkata Metro

Taking to Reddit, u/pipehittingbunny shared observations of travelling from Park Street to Dakshineshwar metro station.

The OP shared how there is no process of metro railway staff physically frisking commuters for security purposes. There are machines installed at Kolkata metro stations for passengers to keep their bags inside to get x-rayed. The Redditor mentioned that stations are old but well-maintained.

All metro stations in the City of Joy have two types of facilities to purchase tickets. First, there are the old token counters where officials provide everyone with tokens. Previously, only money was accepted but UPI and online modes of payment are acceptable now. Not just tokens, there are smart cards as well. This is a great option for daily commuters to avoid waiting in long queues for tokens, especially during rush hours.

In addition to counters, there are vending machines at stations. Passengers need to add their destination and pay the charge. Both offline and online payments are accepted at these vending machines.

The Delhiite further added the presence of security personnel and ushers at different stations. The deployed staff are very active, as shared in the Reddit post. A recording on PA warns all passengers to stand away from the long yellow line on the platforms.

Kolkata metro does not have moulded seats. Benches are installed inside the trains for 6-7 passengers to sit together at once. The OP added that there are no specific ladies’ seats but two benches dedicated for them in each compartment. As a metro commuter of this city, I would like to correct this point. Kolkata metro has reserved seats for women (two benches) in all the coaches. Also, four seats at both ends of a coach are reserved for senior citizens and physically challenged.

What’s the most fun part of taking a ride on the Kolkata metro? It is watching Tom & Jerry while waiting to arrive at your destination.
