The central government has renamed the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) in New Delhi. The name has been officially changed to the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society. The government announced this change on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day on 15 August 2023. Here’s all you need to know about this significant change.
Nehru Memorial Museum Has Been Renamed!
Taking to the social media platform ‘X’, A. Surya Prakash, the vice chairman of the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library’s executive council made the announcement of renaming the museum in the national capital.

He shared about the renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and stated that the name is Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML) Society. Also, he added that the renaming of the museum came into effect on 14 August 2023 “in tune with the democratisation and diversification of the remit of the society”.
A special meeting of the NMML Society was conducted back in the month of June to finalise the decision of implementing the rename of the museum, according to a report by India Today. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over this meeting of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society. Minister Rajnath Singh is also the Vice-President of the Society. Back then, the decision to change the name to the PMML Society came into action.
NMML Authorities Finalised The Date!
The authorities of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library decided the date to change its name to Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society with effect from Monday, according to the India Today report. The Executive Council of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library approved this during the 162nd meeting, according to a report by Zee News. The meeting took place back in November 2016.
