It is time we acknowledge the discrimination that plus-sized people face in the world. It is only recently that people have started to call out fatphobic behaviour ingrained in our society, however, the problem is far from resolved. Recently, a plus-sized woman had to face rude airline staff and was reduced to tears. She also highlighted how the incident that she had to go through demonstrates how terrifying it is to live as a plus-sized woman in this world.

Holly Richards is a business owner who runs AmpleFolk, an inclusive plus-sized brand. Recently, the businesswoman was travelling from Sydney to Melbourne via the airline Jetstar. She said that she had purchased two seats on account of her being plus-sized.
She said this was something that she recently started doing as she did not want people to feel as if she was encroaching on their space. Given that she had two seats, common sense dictates that she could carry more luggage as a carry-on.
However, when she was checking in, the airline staff was incredibly rude to her and said that her luggage was over the limit. When she said that her sleep apnea machine was counted as medical equipment and therefore she was allowed to take it, the person didn’t allow it.

Following this insulting exchange, Holly was reduced to tears. She asked to speak to the person’s manager. Even during this exchange, the manager seemed indifferent at best. He told Holly that because she had booked two seats, the system got confused.
The manager said this to Holly while she was already visibly upset, thus worsening the situation. She later took to the popular social networking website Instagram and said narrated the whole demeaning incident.
She talked about how not only her day was ruined, but also that the incident had taken a toll on her self-esteem. She also went on to mention that being a plus-sized woman in this world was terrifying.
