The biggest myth about Kashmir is that you need ₹60,000 or ₹70,000 for a proper holiday. You don’t! If you book your flights at the right time, choose practical stays instead of luxury resorts and plan your itinerary well, ₹40,000 is enough for a six-day trip covering Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. So, here’s how to do Kashmir on budget.

How To Plan A Kashmir Trip Under ₹40,000

Step 1: Don’t Spend More Than ₹10,000-₹12,000 On Flights

Flights will take up the biggest share of your budget, so this is where planning ahead matters the most.

If you’re flying from Delhi, return fares to Srinagar are commonly available between ₹8,000 and ₹12,000 when booked six to eight weeks in advance. During airline sales or off-peak travel windows, fares can dip even lower. On the other hand, waiting until the last minute, especially around Christmas, New Year, school vacations or long weekends, can push the same tickets well beyond ₹15,000. Travellers flying from Mumbai, Bengaluru or Chennai should budget anywhere between ₹12,000 and ₹18,000, depending on demand and the time of year.

Flying midweek is often cheaper than travelling on Fridays or Sundays. Setting fare alerts lets you track prices instead of booking at the highest point, while being flexible with your travel dates can shave off a few thousand rupees.

Step 2: Keep Your Accommodation Budget Around ₹8,000

A room with a balcony overlooking Dal Lake sounds tempting, but it also comes with a premium price tag. Unless you’re planning to spend your entire holiday inside the hotel, there’s little reason to splurge.

Srinagar has plenty of clean guesthouses, boutique homestays and budget hotels that offer comfortable rooms, attached bathrooms, Wi-Fi and, in many cases, breakfast. Expect to pay ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 per night for a good property!

Accommodation in Gulmarg and Pahalgam is slightly more expensive, with decent options generally priced between ₹4,000 and ₹6,500 per night.

If staying on a houseboat is on your bucket list, don’t skip it altogether. Instead, spend just one night on Dal Lake. Budget houseboats usually cost around ₹3,000 per night, giving you the full experience without doubling your accommodation bill.

Step 3: Allocate ₹6,000-₹7,000 For Local Transport

Transport is one area where travellers often spend more than necessary. Many visitors book private taxis for the entire trip the moment they land in Srinagar. While convenient, it isn’t always the most economical choice, especially for solo travellers or couples.

Shared taxis operate between Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam and are considerably more affordable. A prepaid taxi from Srinagar Airport to the city generally costs ₹700 to ₹1,000, while shared taxis to Gulmarg usually range between ₹300 and ₹500 per seat. Shared rides to Pahalgam typically cost ₹350 to ₹600 per seat.

Step 4: You Don’t Need More Than ₹3,500-₹4,000 For Food

One of the nicest surprises about Kashmir is that eating well doesn’t have to be expensive. Skip the hotel buffet every morning and head to a local bakery instead. Fresh girda, lavasa, kulcha, noon chai and kahwa make for an authentic breakfast that costs a fraction of what many hotels charge.

For lunch and dinner, local restaurants serve generous portions of Kashmiri dishes like rogan josh, yakhni, dum aloo, haak saag, rajma chawal and modur pulao at reasonable prices. A filling meal generally costs ₹250 to ₹500, depending on where you eat.

Step 5: Reserve ₹5,000 For Activities And Sightseeing

This isn’t the category to cut too aggressively because Kashmir’s biggest attractions are also the reason people visit. A Shikara ride across Dal Lake remains one of the Valley’s signature experiences and generally costs ₹700 to ₹1,200 for an hour, depending on the season and your negotiation skills.

The Mughal Gardens, including Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh and Chashme Shahi, have modest entry fees and can easily be covered in a single day. If you’re visiting between late March and April, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is another worthwhile stop.

Then comes the highlight for many travellers, the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable car rides in the world. Ticket prices vary depending on whether you book Phase I, Phase II or both, so it’s best to reserve your tickets online in advance as slots sell out during peak season.

Setting aside ₹5,000 allows you to enjoy Kashmir’s most popular experiences without constantly worrying about your wallet.

Step 6: Keep ₹2,000 Aside For Shopping And Unexpected Expenses

Nobody leaves Kashmir empty-handed. The markets around Lal Chowk, Polo View Market and the Boulevard Road are overflowing with souvenirs, from papier-mâché artefacts and walnut wood carvings to dry fruits, spices and saffron.

If you’re planning to buy a genuine Pashmina shawl, remember that authentic pieces are expensive. Extremely cheap “Pashmina” shawls are often machine-made blends rather than pure Pashmina. If you’re shopping on a budget, locally woven woollen shawls make a far more practical purchase.

So, Where Does Your ₹40,000 Go?

Let’s add it up.

Keep ₹10,000 for flights, ₹8,000 for accommodation, ₹6,500 for transport, ₹3,500 for meals, ₹5,000 for sightseeing and activities, and ₹2,000 for shopping and miscellaneous expenses.

That brings your total to ₹35,000.

The remaining ₹5,000 acts as your safety net. Flight prices fluctuate; you may decide to extend your Shikara ride, stop at a café with a view, buy an extra box of saffron or simply account for seasonal price changes.

A little planning before your trip can stretch your budget further without changing your itinerary. Book flights as soon as your dates are fixed instead of waiting for “better deals.” Stay in Srinagar for most of your trip and take day trips to Gulmarg or Pahalgam if accommodation there is expensive during your travel dates. Share taxis wherever possible, negotiate politely before booking Shikara rides, and always compare rates if you’re shopping for saffron, dry fruits or handicrafts.
