This 66-Million-Year-Old Rock In Mumbai Is Older Than Humans And Dinosaurs!

There are several ancient wonders across India that many of us are still unaware of. One such hidden gem is Gilbert Hill in Andheri, Mumbai, a massive volcanic rock formation. Surprisingly, even many Mumbaikars don’t know its true age. What’s fascinating is that this rock is believed to be far older than humans and even the Himalayas. Here’s all you need to know!

Mumbai’s Gilbert Hill Is 66 Million Years Old And Still Stands Tall

Big cities like Mumbai often have some unique places that go unnoticed. However, amid this, one such landmark that people often admire is Gilbert Hill. This natural landmark shows one of the rarest formations from millions of years ago. Gilbert Hill is very special because it is very rare. According to geological records, only three such column-shaped basalt rock formations exist in the world. The other two are found in the United States and Northern Ireland.

Gilbert Hill is a giant rock formation in Mumbai that is around 66 million years old. It was created when hot lava from powerful volcanic eruptions cooled and turned into solid rock. These same eruptions also formed the Deccan Traps.

What Is At The Top Of This Hill?

In the early and mid-20th century, Gilbert Hill faced a serious threat because its basalt rock was useful for construction. This led to some damage until authorities stepped in to protect it. In 1952, it was declared a national monument. Later, in 2007, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation gave it heritage status, adding stronger protection.

Today, visitors can climb a steep staircase carved into the rock to reach the summit. At the top, there is a flat area with two temples dedicated to Goddess Gaodevi and Goddess Durgamata. From this point, people can see wide views of Andheri, with its roads, buildings, and busy city life stretching in all directions.
