Ludhiana chocolatier and restaurateur, Harjinder Singh Kukreja with a team of 10 chefs created a Ganesha out of chocolate, weighing 200 kg for Ganesh Chaturthi. Kukreja shared a video on Instagram and revealed that it took 10 days, 10 chefs and 200 kg of Belgian Chocolate to create this eco-friendly Ganesha. The chocolatier also revealed that they will perform Visarjan by immersing the chocolate Ganesha idol in milk. This will then be distributed to underprivileged kids in slum areas. It’s the 6th consecutive year that the team are preparing Chocolate Ganesha. Social media lauded the team for their sincere efforts and noble cause.
Dr. Binish Desai Makes Eco-Friendly Ganesha Idols Out Of Jewellery Waste
Ganesh Chaturthi has been a year of vibrant and remarkable celebrations all over India. But what makes this year’s Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations even more exciting and wonderful is the conscious eco-friendly route taken by many devotees to protect the water bodies all over the country. One such man doing his bit for the community is a renowned social entrepreneur and founder of Eco Eclectic Technologies, Dr Binish Desai. To celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi this year, he has made eco-friendly Ganesha idols out of jewellery waste.
How Are These Ganesha Idols Made?
Dr Binish Desai spoke to a reputed news agency about how his eco-friendly Ganesha idols are made. He said that when artificial jewellery, is made, glass beads are scuffed that results in a residue of non-recyclable powdered waste. Jewellery manufacturers get rid of the jewellery waste, which makes its way to the landfills. So Dr Binish and his team used this non-recyclable jewellery waste, used a special jewellery binder and gave it a shape of a Ganesha idol. They later used natural colours derived from flowers like red, yellow and light purple to paint the idol. This is how they made an entire eco-friendly Ganesha idol from jewellery waste.

You will be surprised to know that apart from the Ganesha idol, the entire procedure is eco-friendly. There will be 4 steps- homecoming, visarjan (immersion of the Ganesha idol), repacking and repurposing. The eco-friendly Ganesha will come with a special visarjan bag. Devotees can immerse the idol in a tub filled with water instead of a river. The idol can then be placed in the insoluble visarjan bag and given back to Dr Binish and his team. Once they receive it they will repurpose it, upcycle it and give it back to the user as memorabilia.
This special eco-friendly Ganesha idol made from jewellery waste is priced at a range of Rs 1,800 and Rs 12,000. It will be available from next year onwards. Dr Binish quoted to NDTV that he would like everyone to work towards a sustainable responsibility where we all collectively celebrate festivals in an eco-friendly manner. After all, that is the greatest form of worship to nature and Mother Earth.
