Coca cola is probably one of the most popular drinks in the world. Whether we pair it up with popcorn, pizzas, or burgers, we do enjoy drinking it. However, experts believe that this sugary drink is believed to be a significant contributor to many health problems like obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay. In addition to this adverse effect of coke, a new study has found that coca cola also affects our memory and ability to learn and process.
Study Proves That Soft Drinks Cause Memory Impairment
A new study by researchers at the University of Santa Catarina in Brazil says, “Cola-based soft drinks cause memory impairment at different ages,” and the results were published in the journal Experimental Gerontology. This Vadodara street stall offers chai in edible chocolate cups
The experiment was conducted on a group of rats. Rats were divided into two groups. One group was given water, and the other was given a mixture of cola and water. Cola-drinking rats were found to have worse memory function than other rats. Apart from cognitive function, it was also found that there was oxidative stress in the cola-drinking group of rats. To simply explain, oxidative stress occurs when the body’s balance of antioxidants and free radicals is disrupted. When toxins are not washed out properly, it leads to oxidative stress and several health-related problems afterward.
Thus, the results indicate that long-term soft drink intake leads to memory impairment and oxidative stress.
