Dubai RTA is relentlessly working to ensure that commuters in the emirate can move seamlessly, making travelling in the city easier. And recently, keeping up with this idea, they announced an integrated project for the upgradation of the Al Wasl Road. Yes, to address urban expansion in enhancing the quality of life and population growth, here’s all you need to know about this project.
Al Wasl Road Project Unveiled
With the Dubai RTA launching an integrated project for the development of Al Wasl Road, it is important to know that this development will span 15 km. Yes, it will be from the Umm Suqeim Street till the junction with the 2nd December Street. In fact, this would also include the upgradation of six intersections. Including enhancements to one junction, there will also be construction of five tunnels, which would total up to 3,850 m. In fact, the streets will be widened from two to three lanes in both directions.
It Would Reduce Travel Time By 50%

Additionally, it is expected that with this project, as revealed by Dubai RTA, there would be a reduction in the travel time along the Al Wasl Road by a whopping 50 per cent. Moreover, there would be an increase in the capacity of the vehicles from 8,000 to 12,000 per hour in both directions.
The project has been designed in such a way that it puts focus on creative and aesthetic elements. This includes the incorporation of dedicated pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, vibrant urban public spaces, and even a boulevard. These additions would promote community interaction. Moreover, there are plans to include decorative landscaping and also creation of dynamic urban environments.
Several Tunnels To Be Constructed
As mentioned previously, several tunnels will be developed for the benefit of the commuters. These are as follows:
- An unidirectional tunnel will be constructed at the intersection with Al Manara Street, comprising 3 lanes. These will in turn branch into 2 separate routes! These include two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street and two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road to Umm Suqeim Street.
- A tunnel will also come up on Umm Al Sheif Street. This will include two lanes, which would be in the direction from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street. Moreover, the tunnel will be 750 metres long!
- One would be constructed at the intersection of Al Wasl Road with Umm Amara Street. This would feature two lanes in each direction! Additionally, it would have a total length of 700 metres, with a combined capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour.
- The next undirectional tunnel would be 625 metres long, at the intersection of Al Wasl Road with Al Orouba Street. This would be headed towards Jumeirah Street. It also includes a tunnel at the intersection of Al Wasl Road with Al Safa Street.
- A tunnel will be constructed at the intersection with Al Wasl Road with two lanes. These would be in the direction from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street.
Six Intersections To Be Enhanced
As it happens, the project includes six intersections. All of which will be developed along the Umm Suqeim Street and will be in the following places:
- Jumeirah Street
- Al Wasl Road
- Sheikh Zayed Road
- First Al Khail Road
- Al Asayel Street
- Al Khail Road
At this point, it’s worth mentioning that this project is a part of the Umm Suqeim – Al Qudra Corridor master plan. While it was announced by the RTA quite a while ago, these upgrades are a part of this mass project, and with the development of the road, it’s certainly going to reduce the travel time for commuters.
