Dubai Students Launch Grocery App For Low-Income People In UAE
GEMS Modern Academy in Dubai encouraged their 12th-grade students to participate in this fair. The talented bunch went on to launch an app that would help the low-income group of citizens in UAE to afford groceries. They named the project Ubuntu, which literally means humanity to others. What better name to give to a project that is all about helping people?
The concept of this project was to launch an app and website that would provide items that are near the expiry period at lower or discounted prices to the public. This has two benefits, firstly it would help supermarkets help reduce the amount of trash that obtains due to expiry products. The group of students are starting with vegetables and other products and expects to launch diary and meat next.
Secondly, it will provide access to the low-income strata over things they couldn’t afford normally. The app can eat market of grocery market giants like Lulu & Carrefour in UAE. The students raised more than Dh10,000 through their DubaiNEXT crowdfunding effort. Also, this software received top honours at Food for Future Summit in 2022.
