When it comes to air travel, one size most definitely doesn’t fit all. For families travelling with autistic children, the airport hustle and bustle can be overwhelming. Emirates has launched some incredible initiatives to make flying a whole lot smoother for those on the autism spectrum, making travel more accessible than ever before.
Emirates Takes Flight with Autism Certification: Here’s What You Need to Know
If you thought getting through the airport with a toddler in tow was a challenge, imagine doing it with a child who has autism. Emirates has rolled out a groundbreaking “Travel Rehearsal” programme, currently active in 17 cities across the globe. This programme allows children to experience every part of the airport journey before they even step foot on a plane.
Started in 2023, the initiative helps kids practice airport procedures such as checking in, going through security, and navigating busy duty-free areas. It’s a collaborative effort, involving Emirates, Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, and several autism centres in Dubai. The best part? The programme is free to participate in, though it’s currently by invitation only. The goal is simple: to make the airport experience as familiar and comfortable as possible, breaking down barriers before they even arise.
Autism-Certified Cabin Crew: Ready for Every Passenger
In an aviation first, Emirates has become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline™. This major milestone means that more than 30,000 staff members, including cabin crew and ground support, are trained to assist passengers with autism. From understanding sensory needs to being aware of potential triggers, these staff members are equipped with the knowledge to help passengers feel at ease, whether they’re just passing through security or sitting at 35,000 feet.
This training isn’t just a quick course—it’s a detailed, ongoing commitment to accessibility, developed in partnership with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). The goal? To ensure that no matter where passengers are on their journey, they’re met with compassion, patience, and understanding.
Raising Awareness: Bringing Autism to the Big Screen
Throughout April, in honour of Autism Awareness Month, Emirates used its award-winning inflight entertainment system, ice, to showcase films and podcasts highlighting autism and neurodiversity. From movies like Temple Grandin to the docuseries Inside Our Autistic Minds, Emirates made sure passengers had plenty of content to raise awareness and spark conversation on the topic
