During his musical tour in March 2024, Ed Sheeran visited India and hung around with many Bollywood celebrities. The Shape of You singer also filmed an episode of Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show. The episode which dropped recently, gave Ed Sheeran and Kapil Sharma fans quite a bit to take home. From performing a medley of his hits on Bhangra beats to bantering with Kapil, it was quite a riot. Ed also sportingly revealed the weirdest dish he once ate.

During a fun Q&A session on The Great Indian Kapil Show, comedian and anchor Kapil Sharma asked Ed Sheeran about the weirdest food he has ever eaten. The singer candidly replied it was fish sperm. “What?!” asked Archana Puran Singh in bewilderment as the crowd gasped in shock. Ed explained that Japan has sushi and omakase restaurants where the chef prepares different bites and keeps them in front of the diner. These include sushi, nigiri and “other little things.”

“I think it’s called shirako,” says Ed. He states that it’s a fish testicle when eaten, that explodes in one’s mouth. While some people love it, the singer admits he isn’t a big fan of it.

What Is Shirako?

Shirako means “white children” in Japanese and is a much-loved winter delicacy in the country. And yes, it isn’t for the faint of heart as it is basically sperm sacs of male fish like pufferfish, anglerfish or cod. It is known to have a creamy, custard-like texture with a mildly sweet flavour.

A versatile ingredient in Japanese cuisine which can be eaten raw in sashimi or deep-fried to make tempura. The fish sperm or shirako is also added atop sushi rice or thinly sliced and simmered in a flavoursome broth.
