On August 26, 2023, over 200 women took to the roads of Dubai. Steering cars and bikes in a spirited drive, the Women of Dubai participated in the ‘Abaya Rally’. This event was orchestrated to champion women’s empowerment and coincide with Emirati Women’s Day on August 28. The Abaya, a cherished traditional overgarment adorning women in the UAE and beyond, became a symbol of unity for women from diverse backgrounds.

The third edition of the Abaya Rally unfolded at Dubai Autodrome. Enthusiasts from varied walks of life, spanning from motoring aficionados to everyday drivers, commandeered a range of vehicles – from sleek supercars to practical hatchbacks, as well as the powerful engines of motorbikes. The rally’s essence lies in paying homage to Emirati women and women globally.
The timing of the event couldn’t have been more apt, aligning perfectly with the celebration of Emirati Women’s Day. The origins of the rally date back to 2020, when the concept was born to honour the rich traditions and cultures of the UAE. Hence the idea of an Abaya Rally came about. While the first edition took place in December, it moved close to Emirati Women’s Day to celebrate the day and women from around the world.

Beyond the exhilarating drives, the Abaya Rally fostered connections and forged new friendships. Maggie Simak, a Czech expat in Dubai, navigated her Harley-Davidson Sport Glide motorcycle through the rally. The celebration also witnessed men’s participation. It was also great to see men in support of a day dedicated to women’s empowerment.
The Abaya Rally serves as an inspiring testament to the strength that emerges when women unite to drive change for a sustainable world. This event commemorates not only Emirati women but also women worldwide. Pragna Vaya, the driving force and managing director behind Orbit Events and Promotions, played a pivotal role as one of the organizers of the Abaya Rally 2023. Speaking to Gulf News, she articulated upon the triumph of the inaugural edition, a ‘Kandura Rally’. It was named in honour of the traditional attire of Arab men.
