Every year, Wimbledon draws the world’s best tennis players to London for the prestigious Grand Slam. While the thrilling matches and rich traditions captivate fans, there’s another iconic Wimbledon staple that players absolutely love: the tournament towels! Over the years, these soft terry towels have become the ultimate souvenirs, with nearly 85% reportedly taken home by competitors after the event. But did you know that these world-famous Wimbledon towels are actually made in India?

Made In India: Wimbledon Towel Edition!

From Roger Federer to Novak Djokovic, many tennis stars are known for collecting the iconic Wimbledon towels. But here’s a lesser-known fact: these coveted towels aren’t made in the UK. Instead, they’re manufactured in Vapi, Gujarat.

Since 1987, Wimbledon has partnered with luxury home textiles brand Christy to produce its official towels. Originally, the towels were manufactured in Greater Manchester, England. However, that changed after Indian textile giant Welspun Living Limited acquired a majority stake in Christy in 2006.

A few years later, between 2009 and 2010, production was shifted from the UK to Welspun’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Vapi and Anjar, Gujarat. Today, the iconic towels used by the world’s top tennis players are made in India, while continuing to uphold the quality and tradition Wimbledon is known for.

Designing the iconic Wimbledon towels is no small feat. The process begins nearly 18 months in advance, allowing designers to create a collection that reflects upcoming global fashion and colour trends.

For the 2026 edition, Christy and Welspun unveiled two distinct designs. One features Wimbledon’s signature deep green paired with elegant purple stripes, while the other embraces a fresh seasonal palette inspired by the tournament’s most beloved tradition: strawberries and cream.

Why Are These Towels So Famous?

But why exactly are Wimbledon towels so famous? Well, according to reports online, these towels are highly absorbent. They are made with premium 500 GSM 100% combed cotton. The HygroCotton technology allows the yarn to ‘bloom,’ making the towel highly absorbent, fast-drying, and fluffy even after repeated washes. For players, this means that with just one swipe of the towel, they’re able to wipe off the sweat and continue to play!
