Did You Know You Can Live For Free In This Greek Paradise, But There Is A Catch!

If Greece’s stunning islands are on your travel bucket list but your budget says otherwise, here’s some good news. This summer, you can live for free on the beautiful island of Syros and enjoy complimentary housing, breakfast, and more–all you have to do is help take care of cats. Intrigued? Scroll on to know more.

Free Housing, Breakfast & More At This Greece Island

According to Travel + Leisure Asia India, the Greek island of Syros is looking for volunteers to help care for its stray cats. In return, volunteers will receive free accommodation, utilities, and breakfast. Located in the Aegean Sea, Syros launched this initiative to address its large stray cat population. Despite the support of locals, these strays often struggle to find food and medical care. To support this effort, local charities such as Syros Cats have stepped in with volunteer-driven programmes like this one.

According to the report, volunteers will work alongside local teams to neuter, socialise, feed, and provide veterinary care to the cats. While applications for Summer 2026 are currently closed, interested applicants can keep an eye on Syros Cats’ official website, as applications for Summer 2027 are expected to open in the autumn.

Taking Care Of Cats In Syros

The Syros Cats sanctuary opened in the 1990s and has since become the pioneer of the island’s now well-established welfare movement. They are always on the lookout for ‘fit, mature, healthy, and independent’ people to sign up for long-term stays of at least one month to help out with the stray cats on the island.

Selected volunteers are required to follow these daily tasks –

1. Work five hours a day, from 8 AM to 1 PM, for five days a week.
2. They will have to feed and clean the cats, refill their water bowls, maintain the gardens, clean litter trays, cuddle and play with cats, and make trips to the vet, Travel + Leisure Asia India reported.
