Why Is The Temple Closed For 3 Days?
The Ambubachi Mela is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. This festival celebrates the annual menstruation cycle. As per Free Press Journal, devotees believe this period represents fertility, creation, and the strength of womanhood in Hindu belief. During this time, the temple follows a special tradition. It remains closed for three days, and people are not allowed to worship or perform religious rituals inside the shrine. The goddess is believed to be resting during this phase.
After remaining closed for three days, the temple opens on the fourth day. Devotees gather to seek blessings, and special cleansing rituals are also performed. A key highlight is that devotees receive a piece of red cloth called “Angabastra,” which is believed to be a holy blessing from the goddess.
