Every guide for an India–UAE flight covers the same four banned items: ghee, pickle, spices, and dry coconut. Fair enough, that’s the stuff people actually pack. But it’s also the bit you’ve probably already read, possibly on this very site. What doesn’t get talked about nearly enough is medicine and the much longer list of everyday objects that’ll get you pulled aside at security for reasons that have nothing to do with your mother’s specially packed tiffin.

Medicine Is The Part Everyone Skips

If you’re travelling with controlled medication, you can’t just pack it and hope. You need approval through the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) website before you fly, not after you land. Start by checking with your doctor whether what you’re on counts as controlled; plenty of common prescriptions do without people realising, and carry the prescription that matches the exact quantity you’re bringing in.

Everything else regular prescriptions, over-the-counter medicine doesn’t need pre-approval. But if you’re at all unsure, the nearest UAE embassy or consulate can tell you before you travel, which beats finding out at the gate.

Narcotics And Illegal Substances

This is the one with zero grey area. Hashish, cocaine, heroin, poppy seeds and hallucinogenic pills are banned outright, and the UAE enforces this without exception. No narcotic or psychotropic substance travels without prior medical-use approval already sorted, and that includes things that don’t look like drugs. Poppy seeds turn up in more traditional Indian sweets than people expect, which is exactly how one Bihar expat ended up detained at Abu Dhabi airport over a Raskadam nobody thought twice about packing.

What Else Gets Flagged?

This is the list that rarely makes it into the ghee-and-pickle guides:

  • Poppy seeds
  • Strong-smelling fruit like durian, champedak, pedalai, marang, jackfruit
  • Cricket bats, skateboards, fishing rods
  • Measuring tapes (cabin baggage)
  • Toy guns and imitation weapons
  • Bows and arrows
  • Weapons and weapon replicas
  • Knives with blades 6cm or longer
  • Explosives and ammunition, including fireworks and firecrackers

Also worth knowing: paan (betel leaves) and cooked food items don’t clear the border at all, according to Dubai Customs, a rule that sits alongside the wider list of items witchcraft, sorcery and black magic supplies that also can’t come through, which is a stranger list than you’d think.

A Quick Glance At Food Rules

You’ve likely seen this bit before, so the short version: dry coconut is banned outright in both cabin and check-in, spices are check-in only, and pickle is fine both ways except chilli pickle, which stays out of your cabin bag. Ghee is allowed in both if capped at 100ml in the cabin under LAG rules and up to 5kg in check-in.
