Move over bizarre food trends because Beijing has brewed up something truly next level! An insect-themed museum in China’s capital is going viral for serving coffee with cockroach powder sprinkled on top! Yes, you read that right. And if that’s not wild enough, people claim it has a “burnt and slightly sour” flavour. The internet is horrified, confused, and oddly curious–all at once!

Coffee With A Hint Of Powdered Cockroach, Anyone?

If you were horrified by the revelation that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves of a small amount of insect contamination in coffee, then this one will push you over the edge. A museum in China is serving coffee topped with ground cockroaches sprinkled right over the drink.

Wait, there is more! According to the South China Morning Post, besides the powdered cockroach, the coffee also has dried yellow mealworms in it! Locals who have tried this “unique” drink said that the concoction has a “burnt and slightly sour” flavour.

This cockroach coffee is being served at coffee shops at an insect museum in Beijing, China and it costs 45 yuan (₹565.5) a cup. It is to be noted that the museum’s name was not given in any media report.

Keep Your Coffee ‘Worm’ & Flavourful!

If the cockroach coffee shocked you, brace yourself, because it gets even wilder! Reports say the museum cafes have rolled out a menu with an even more bizarre lineup. Keeping up with the museum’s insect theme, they’re now serving drinks made with pitcher plant digestive juice and a limited-edition ant-infused beverage. Yes, it’s a whole new level of adventurous sipping!

To reassure visitors, a museum staff member told local media that all the ingredients used in these unusual drinks are sourced from a traditional Chinese medicine herb shop. According to traditional beliefs, cockroach powder is thought to improve blood circulation. Some also claim that protein-rich yellow mealworms can help strengthen the immune system.
