To ensure that people eat safe and hygienic food, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir is planning to set up Street Food Cart Zones at several locations. This means that foodies will now have a separate area to relish all their favourite items. Here’s what we know about this so far.
Srinagar To Get Dedicated Street Food Cart Zones
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is known for its lakes and houseboats. But local foodies know that its street food like Tujji, Harissa, Nadru Monje and Noon Chai is something no one can ever say no to. And now, to ensure that the food served to locals and tourists remains hygienic, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to establish designated street food zones.
It will bring street food vending under a structured and sustainable framework. According to Greater Kashmir, the initiative seeks to create organised spaces for street food vendors. Plus, it also ensures food safety, sanitation, pedestrian convenience and, of course, responsible use of public spaces. This means that people may not see food carts parked at random spots on the road, which is usually the case in many places.

Where You Can Find These Zones?
According to Greater Kashmir, the plan will be implemented in phases. Locations identified to set up the street food zones in the first phase include:
- Dalgate Bund
- Badamwari
- JVC Bemina
- Magarmal Bagh
- Rajbag
- Opposite JKTDC Water Sports.
Authorities are also planning to include a location along the right side of the River Jhelum. Each zone will have a regulated holding capacity. This will be determined on the basis of available space, pedestrian movement, accessibility, traffic conditions and after considering all the fire-safety requirements.
Furthermore, all food carts will be required to follow standardised designs and specifications. They will maintain food hygiene, have potable water, proper waste segregation systems and wastewater management. Plus, they will also display applicable municipal and FSSAI permissions along with a menu and price list.
