From Aug 1, Exceeding 130 kmph On Karnataka Highways Will Attract Fines & Imprisonment

Ever since its inauguration on March 12, 2023, the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway has been infamous for accidents. Termed as “accident den” or even “highway to hell” this expressway witnessed 296 accidents and 132 fatalities between January and June 2023. To avoid further accidents on this highway or any highway in the state, Karnataka Police has now imposed a new rule where vehicles exceeding 130 kmph will face an FIR from August 1 onwards.

Overspeeding On Karnataka Highways Will Attract Fines

As per a report by Times Of India, to curb rash and negligent driving, Karnataka Police has imposed a new rule that is effective from August 1, 2024. Vehicles cruising at speed above 130 km/h on state highways will get into legal trouble. Violators will be fined up to ₹1000 or may face imprisonment of up to six months or both. On Thursday, around 155 vehicles were seen exceeding speed limits of 130 kmph on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway. One of the vehicles caught was a KSRTC bus cruising at 140 kmph.

ADGP Traffic and Road Safety Alok Kumar stated to TOI that CCTV footage on the highway shows a noticeable rise in speeding. With a telos to reduce rash driving on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway or any state highway for that matter, Karnataka Police will take strict actions against violators. Kumar informed that the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway now has laser guns installed to record speed levels during day and night times.

The Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras (ANPRC) along the highway help the police identify overspeeding vehicles. Kumar further added that five to six of these laser guns have been sent to police in different districts. The Police will lodge FIRs against violators under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 281.

Similarly, statewide operations will also be conducted on drivers having faulty number plates and those driving on the wrong side of the road. A senior police officer stated to TOI that he has instructed the traffic police to take strict action against vehicular riding two-wheelers on footpaths and breaking other traffic rules in Bengaluru.
