From Building Helipads To Gardens, MMRDA Has Fancy Plans For Mithi River Near BKC!

The Mithi River is located on Salsette Island in Mumbai city. It is the meeting point of the tail-water discharge of the Vihar and Powai lakes. The river rises during the monsoons and is a seasonal feature. Recently, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed a plan to develop a recreational area beside the river. Here is all about the Mithi River project.

In Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the MMRDA has planned a dining space, outdoor sports and recreational activities, and even a helipad along the Mithi River. The authorities have recently released basic plans and requested contractor bids. The area behind Dhirubhai Ambani International School in BKC is the proposed site. It shares a plot boundary and a road with the Mithi River.

According to a Hindustan Times report, a recreation area will be built on more than 1.05 lakh square metres of land in the G-Block within three years. According to the MMRDA officials, tenders have been issued for the planning, construction, financing, and operation of this leisure area with related facilities along the Mithi River. A helipad and a lawn for banquets are also conceivable. They have given contractors until July 17 to submit their proposals for how they want to develop it, after which they will wait.

A Part Of The Project Land Comes Under Coastal Regulatory Zone

Non-CRZ land is about 68,000 square metres, and there is an extra built-up area of 12,500 square metres or so. According to the idea, MMRDA could create a garden and a field for outdoor sporting events inside the CRZ. Depending on what the contractors offer, the garden might contain gazebos that face the river and seating space.

Environmental groups claim that the authority seems unaware of how dirty and foul-smelling the stagnant river is, using the riverside eateries of London, Dubai, and other foreign cities as a model. They further stated that it was the responsibility of MMRDA authorities to make sure that all development took place outside of the buffer zone. Permanent structures cannot sustain in the coastal regulatory zone (CRZ).

Additionally, the Mithi River needs to be cleaned because it is contaminated with untreated sewage, and has mosquitoes in the mangroves.
