A new month means another list of unmissable celestial events! We don’t want you to miss out on any of the ethereal upcoming events for August. So, here are some of the marvellous astronomical events that will leave you speechless. Take out your astronomical instruments and gaze at the sky above.

4 Celestial Events To Look Out For In August 2024

1. Perseid Meteor Shower

Are you ready to witness a spectacular celestial event in August that will light up the sky with thousands of meteors? The Perseid Meteor Shower is said to be one of the strongest meteor showers of 2024. It will appear near the Perseus constellation in the northeast-east sky. Watch out for these showers from midnight of the 11th to early morning of the 13th. Perseids, originating from the comet Swift-Tuttle, are estimated to generate 50 to 100 meteors per hour! The sky will light up as Perseids have radiating colourful meteors. These are also known as fireballs; it is going to be epic!

2. The Conjunction Of Moon And Jupiter

Bring out your stargazing binoculars because the magical meeting of Jupiter and the moon is happening this August! Look for the conjunction above the east-northeast horizon on the 14th of August as they are the closest at that point. Geek yourself out by discovering the actual positions throughout the month until their meeting date. By doing so, you can watch them come nearer to their conjunction.

3. Supermoon

People have been waiting for this amazing full moon of 2024. This celestial event in August will brighten the darkest of the skies on the 19th. This phenomenon makes the moon appear a lot closer to the Earth. This, in turn, means it appears bigger than usual. The moon is said to rise above the east-southeast horizon. This supermoon is also known as the Sturgeon Moon. It is named after the sturgeon fish found in abundance in the North American lakes. Astrology nerds are aware of this moon symbolising abundance, wisdom and transformation.

4. The Conjunction Of Moon, Mars And Jupiter

After the stunning conjunction of the moon and Jupiter, it is time for Mars to join the celestial party! Be up at 2 in the morning to witness a glorious celestial event with a glowing crescent moon right above Jupiter and Mars in the eastern sky. If you have difficulty spotting this heavenly event, then look for the Taurus constellation. The trio will be near this constellation and create a pyramid in the sky with Betelgeuse, the second brightest star in Orion. It will be visible until sunrise.
