Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is revered as the father of the Indian Constitution. Just ahead of the 75th Republic Day of India, we are focusing on the popular statues erected to honour him around the world. His popularity is not just restricted to the lands of India but to every one of the corners of the world. His beliefs as a social reformer and political leader have changed a lot for the minorities of India. For the same, his newest installation in Andhra Pradesh became the tallest in the world.

1. Statue of Social Justice, India (Andhra Pradesh)

Recently, the Statue of Social Justice was unveiled by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy in Andhra Preash and is the tallest structure of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in the world! The statue in itself is 125 ft tall and the platform on which it is erected is 81 ft tall. In total, it comes out to be 206 ft and the tallest ever statue of Ambedkar in the world. Reddy declared that the Statue of Social Justice shows the spirit of Dalits and minorities in the society in India.

2. Statue of Equality, USA

Last year, this statue was the tallest statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, outside of India. It was erected in Maryland, USA and is 19 feet tall. This statue is a part of the Ambedkar International Centre. It was sculpted by the renowned artist Ram Sutar who is known to work on Sardar Patel’s Statue of Unity in Gujarat. This is to honour his contribution to the notion of equality in society. 

3. His First Open-Air Sculpture, United Kingdom

This statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was established in the year 2000 in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. This is considered to be his first open-air sculpture erected right outside the Buddha Vihara by the Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Committee of Great Britain. This unique one is holding a book which is written by him and the title is ‘Buddha And His Dhamma’.

 

4. At Koyasan University, Japan

A statute at Koyasan University in Japan was unveiled as India was celebrating its 125th birth anniversary. The then-Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis did the honours and said that the statute of Ambedkar was a gift to Koyasan University from the state of Maharashtra and the entire India. It was a reminder of the Constitution of India and inclusivity. Even a memorandum was signed between the Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University and the University of Japan.

5. At King Henry, London

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar stayed here for almost two years. The house is now a memorial to honour him. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this back in 2015 and is now a popular tourist attraction in London.
