Here’s All You Need To Know About The Highway

The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Greenfield Expressway (DAK Expressway) is a significant infrastructure project by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI. It aims to connect Jasaur Kheri, Jhajjar District, near Delhi, to Katra, north of Jammu city. This expressway is part of the North-South Corridor and is designed as a 4-lane access-controlled road with a total length of approximately 650 kilometres.

All About Project Phases And Estimated Costs

  • The DAK Expressway is divided into two main phases. Phase 1 involves the construction of a 397.7 km greenfield expressway connecting Delhi to Gurdaspur and a 99 km spur from Nakodar to Amritsar.
  • The estimated cost of Phase 1 is around Rs 25,000 crore, and it has been divided into 18 sections for construction, with a completion deadline set for December 2025.
  • Phase 2 will involve a brownfield expansion of the existing NH-54 (old NH-15) and NH-44 (old NH-1) highway to connect Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Jammu, and Katra.

Note The Impeccable Project Features

  • The expressway will consist of 4 lanes (expandable to 8) and have a right of way (ROW) of 90 metres.
  • The project is under construction and is being executed using the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).

  • The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and alignment studies for the DAK Expressway were prepared in 2019. The land acquisition for the same began in January 2020.
  • The route for Phase 1 starts from Kheri Jasaur village in Jhajjar district and ends at Gurdaspur Bypass. The Nakodar-Amritsar spur connects Nakodar village to Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport.

The Importance Of The Highway

  • The DAK Expressway features Asia’s longest 1300-meter cable-stayed bridge over the Beas River.
  • It will connect major religious sites of the Sikh community, including the Golden Temple, Sultanpur Lodhi Gurdwara, Goindwal Sahib Gurdwara, Khadoor Sahib Gurdwara, and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib (Taran Taran) to Mata Darbar Vaishno Devi in Katra.
  • The expressway will improve connectivity, boost trade and commerce, create jobs, and enhance tourism in the region.

How Will It Impact The Travel Time?

  • The expressway is expected to reduce travel time and distance significantly. It will reduce the travel time from Delhi to Amritsar to 4 hours. The travel time from Delhi to Katra will also go down to 6 hours.
  • The distance between Delhi and Katra will be reduced by 58 km, making travel more convenient and efficient.
  • The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Greenfield Expressway is a transformative project that will enhance connectivity. It will also have a positive impact on the economy and tourism in the region.
