According to a report by The Indian Express, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated 600 Indira Canteens across Karnataka. This included unveiling the Indira Canteen at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar and other ministers dined at Indira Canteen after the inauguration. They sipped filter kaapi and had Chow Chow Baath.

CM Siddaramaiah stated to The Indian Express that the Congress government will start 188 new Indira Canteens in the capital. He called the canteen at Kempegowda Airport a requirement. Due to the demand of taxi drivers and other drivers, the government has opened two canteens to cater to them.

Out of 188 canteens planned, 40 of them have been completed and the rest are nearing completion. Furthermore, he adds that Indira Canteen has a purpose to offer meals and breakfast to the needy at low rates. One can grab breakfast priced at ₹5. Lunch and dinner costs ₹10 each. The canteens also have dining halls. These canteens will be set up in every ward of Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka.

The one at Kempegowda Airport was solely built to feed drivers who need to commute at odd hours to and from the airport. The exorbitant rates charged by the restaurants at airport terminals often left them hungry. A BBMP official further stated that at least some of the drivers can now depend on Indira Canteen for staples.

After all breakfast at Bengaluru Airport costs no less than ₹200, he observed. BBMP expects around 2000 customers mostly airport cab drivers and bus drivers at Indira Canteen nestled at Bengaluru Airport. The canteen along with the kitchen was built at a cost of ₹1.35 crore.
