Blowing candles before cutting the cake on a birthday has been a tradition going on for centuries now. Going back in history, it was first a part of a ritual to honour gods, keep away evil spirits, and even to send wishes up to the sky. According to ResearchGate, some people believe that the smoke from candles carries their wishes and prayers to the gods.

Now, food safety expert Professor Paul Dawson, from Clemson University, revealed that this traditional practice can be a reason for spreading thousands of bacteria. NDTV reported that, while talking to CNN, the professor opened up about this and said when blowing out the candle, the tiny water droplets from their mouth land on the cake.

According to his research, just one blow can release thousands of bacteria. He added that it’s not dangerous for everyone as in our daily lives, we are prone to some bacteria. However, it can affect people with weak immune systems, elderly people or someone who is sick.
