Two High Speed Trains Collide In Southern Spain; 21 Dead, 100 Injured

At least 21 people lost their lives after a tragic train crash in southern Spain. The incident happened on Sunday when a high-speed train derailed and collided with another train. Around 100 people were injured, with at least 30 reported to be in serious condition. Here are all the details we know so far.

High Speed Train Crash In Spain 

According to a report by The Guardian, the train was travelling from Malaga to Madrid on Sunday. It derailed near Adamuz and crossed onto the opposite track, where it hit an oncoming train. The second train also derailed following the collision. The crash has left Spain in mourning. At least 21 people were killed, while nearly 100 passengers were injured. Thirty of them are said to be in a serious condition.

The cause of the derailment is still unclear. The crash occurred in the early evening, and rescue operations continued amid darkness. Hundreds of survivors were pulled out from the wreckage of the crash. A journalist from public broadcaster RNE shared with The Guardian that the impact felt like an “earthquake.” Passengers used emergency hammers to break carriage windows and escape from the damaged coaches.

Rail Services Suspended 

According to The Times of India, the crash took place around 7:45 pm local time in Adamuz. The rear carriages of the first train derailed and crossed onto the opposite track. They then struck another passing train, causing the front two carriages of the second service to derail as well. The first train was privately operated and was travelling from Malaga to Madrid. The second train was run by Spain’s national rail company and was heading to the southern city of Huelva, west of Seville.

Reportedly, the Andalucia regional government set up advanced medical posts at the crash site to treat the injured. Spain’s national rail operator and railway authorities assisted families of the victims at stations in Madrid, Seville, Cordoba, Malaga and Huelva. Rail services between Madrid and key southern Andalusian cities, including Cordoba, Seville, Malaga and Huelva, will remain suspended on Monday.
