Why Was The Sandwich Introduced?
As generations passed, the great-grandson, known as the ‘Fourth Earl of Sandwich’, John Montagu, became the ruler. He was very fond of ‘shatranj’ (chess). He was often so engrossed in the game that he wanted a food item that could be eaten easily, wouldn’t ruin his hands or distract him.
So, he came up with a solution; he placed a filling between two slices of bread and ate it while playing. Since John Montagu, the ‘Fourth Earl of Sandwich’, introduced this idea, the dish came to be known as the sandwich from around 1762.
Today, we enjoy this dish with different types of fillings like vegetables, Mexican-style, cheese, and more.
