If your morning routine involves a hot cup of coffee and a scoop of protein powder, you may have wondered whether the heat is actually ruining the protein. After all, we’ve often heard that high temperatures can change proteins. So, does adding protein powder to your steaming coffee make it less effective? According to biochemist and nutrition expert Jessie Inchauspé, the answer is a little more reassuring than you might expect.

Jessie Inchauspé (@glucosegoddess) took to Instagram to share that heat can cause proteins to denature, which simply means their structure changes. However, denaturation does not automatically mean the protein has lost its nutritional value.

The bigger question is how much heat the protein is exposed to and for how long. A regular cup of hot coffee isn’t the same as exposing protein to extremely high temperatures during cooking or industrial processing.

So, if you enjoy adding a scoop of whey protein to your morning coffee, you don’t necessarily need to give up the habit just because your coffee is hot.

What Happens When You Add Protein Powder To Coffee?

You may notice that protein powder behaves differently when mixed with very hot liquids. Some powders can become clumpy, grainy or curdled, particularly when added directly to piping-hot coffee.

This is more of a texture issue than proof that the protein has been destroyed. One easy way to avoid the dreaded lumps is to first mix the protein powder with a little cool water or milk to create a smooth mixture, and then add your hot coffee.

Protein coffee can be a convenient way to combine your caffeine fix with some extra protein, especially if you’re already using protein powder as part of your diet.

The important thing is not to assume that a little heat automatically makes protein ineffective. As the biochemist explained, the protein in hot coffee remains useful, even though heat can alter its structure.

So, if your morning starts with a hot coffee, you don’t necessarily have to choose between your caffeine and your protein. You can have both in the same cup.

FAQs

Does hot coffee destroy whey protein?

No, heat can change the structure of whey protein through a process called denaturation, but this does not automatically mean the protein loses its nutritional value.

Can you add protein powder to hot coffee?

Yes, you can. Adding protein powder to hot coffee is generally fine, although very hot coffee may cause the powder to become clumpy or change its texture.

How can you mix protein powder with hot coffee without lumps?

Try mixing the protein powder with a small amount of cool or room-temperature water or milk first to make a smooth paste. You can then gradually add the hot coffee and stir well.
