Good news for travellers! Nepal is now planning a ‘Passport-Free Travel’ system for foreign visitors travelling to the country. Instead of carrying a physical passport for certain travel-related services within Nepal, visitors may be able to use an official Department of Immigration app on their mobile phones. Keep reading to know how this new system could work.
Nepal Is Considering A Passport-Free Travel System For Tourists
The Department of Immigration of Nepal is now considering reducing the need to use physical passports for certain services for foreign visitors in the country. According to Telangana Today, it is preparing a ‘Passport-Free Travel’ system. Under the proposed system, tourists will be required to upload their passport and visa details through an official app. This move aims to simplify travel, hotel check-ins, currency exchange and visa services.
Now, let’s talk about how foreign visitors will use this facility. Once they arrive in Nepal, they will have to download the official app of the Department of Immigration on their mobile phones. After that, they will be required to fill in the necessary information, including a scanned copy of their passport and visa details. This could allow them to travel across the country without carrying their physical passports for certain services.

Immigration App Could Make Travel Easier
According to Telangana Today, the immigration app will be available on both Android and Apple iOS platforms. Once the details are uploaded on the app, visitors may not have to show their physical passport for services such as boarding domestic flights, exchanging currencies at money exchange counters, checking into hotels or making other travel arrangements.
Sometimes, travellers often forget their passports at a hotel in Nepal, which causes inconvenience. This system could help them avoid such problems while on holiday. Apart from making the process simpler for visitors, the initiative also has another purpose. It will allow Nepali authorities to track foreign nationals in the country.
However, Nepal’s current official immigration guidance still says that foreign nationals travelling to and within Nepal must carry a valid passport and visa.
