Keep scrolling to see how it came to life.

Crochet Christmas Tree At Museum Of Goa

Get ready to see Christmas like never before! At the Museum of Goa, an 18-foot, colourful crochet Christmas tree steals the show at Where We Gather, part of the Festivals of Goa. This isn’t any ordinary tree—it’s made entirely by hand! As per The Hindu, the Goa-based Crochet Collective was started in 2025 by Sheena Pereira, Sharmila Majumdar, and Sophy Sivaraman. With the help of 25 women, they created a unique Christmas tree that included 1,000 hand-crocheted squares.

Sheena had always dreamed of making a giant crochet artwork. The team worked on it all year so it could come alive by Christmas, spreading a message of peace, hope, joy, and love. What began as a simple idea turned into a beautiful collaboration built on trust, creativity, and teamwork.

How This Christmas Tree Was Made

Much of the magic happened at Sharmila Majumdar’s home. The women often came together there, crocheting while sharing songs, snacks, sweets, and stories. The project was self-funded and took three months to complete, reported The Hindu. They used acrylic yarn, which works better than wool in Goa’s humid weather and heavy monsoons.

Each woman got a set colour palette and could choose to work from home or meet others once a month across North and South Goa. In the beginning, all planning happened over Zoom and WhatsApp. When it was time to put the tree together, many of them met in person for the first time—but the teamwork felt natural and effortless.

Civil engineer Lakhmikanth Kamble donated the entire metal frame and helped with transport and setup. Instead of joining the crochet pieces into panels, the team attached all 1,000 squares individually to the frame. This overlapping style gave the tree a layered, 3D look, just like real branches.

Finding a venue was tricky. The team decided not to wait and kept working. The chance came when Sharmila linked the project to the Museum of Goa’s 10th anniversary celebrations. The museum welcomed the installation, and the tree finally found its home in Porvorim.
