Rooted in tradition and folklore, Goa’s spring festivals come alive in colour and gusto. Derived from the Konkani word “Shigmotsav,” which translates to “celebration of colours,” Shigmo marks the onset of spring. Despite Goa’s history of colonisation, the Shigmo festival, which has its roots in Konkan folklore, has managed to retain its unique character apart from Portuguese influences.

Typically falling in March, this joyous occasion lasts for nearly two weeks, with each day brimming with lively parades, traditional dances, vibrant costumes, and exuberant music. This year’s festival will be held from March 26 to April 8, 2024.
While Portuguese colonial control had a tremendous impact on Goan culture, including language, religion, and architecture, Shigmo’s traditions and rituals are deeply entrenched in indigenous Konkan culture. The festival’s emphasis on Hindu mythology, traditional dances, and folklore echoes pre-colonial habits and beliefs. Shigmo is Goa welcoming the spring season in the Konkan style.
Beyond its aesthetic splendour, Shigmo holds deep cultural significance for the people of Goa. Families come together to partake in the festivities, sharing traditional meals, exchanging gifts, and reaffirming bonds of kinship and friendship. For many Goans, Shigmo is not merely a festival but a way of life. Like many other Indian festivals, it is historically significant. It began as a ceremony to bring home warriors who had departed after Dussehra to fight the invaders. People celebrated the heroic warriors with traditional folk dances and reenactments of epic tales, resulting in a magnificent event.

At the heart of Shigmo are the colourful processions. These parades feature elaborately adorned floats, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, local legends, and everyday life. Accompanying the floats are troupes of dancers, clad in resplendent attire. One of the most enchanting aspects of Shigmo is the array of vibrant costumes worn by participants. They reflect the unique cultural heritage of Goa’s diverse communities. Throughout the festival, the air is filled with the melodious strains of traditional music, performed on instruments.
The Shigmo festival also marks the end of winter and the ripening of winter crops, Vhadlo Shigmo (large Shigmo) and Dhakto Shigmo (little Shigmo). Vhadlo Shigmo is a more widespread event. But, Dhakto Shigmo involves farmers, labourers, and rural groups.
In its vibrant colours and infectious energy, Shigmo offers a glimpse into the soul of Goa.
