Strikes at Heathrow Airport in London were certainly the biggest talk of the town in the past few weeks. The strikes by the security staff of the airport were a detailed plan for 31 days this summer. Starting from the last week of June to August 2023, the walkouts were planned throughout this span of 3 months. Not just from June, the staff conducted walkouts previously as well during April and May this year. But this time, the strikes have been cancelled officially.
Here’s Why The Heathrow Airport Strikes Have Been Called Off
The staff and workers of the airport decided to hold strikes because of the low wages. The airport once stated that they offered a 10 per cent increase in payment but the Unite union felt that the pay was not enough. The Unite stated that a surge of 10 per cent is not the answer to all the pay cuts and freezing of payment in the past. And this is the primary reason why they voted for walkouts. According to the scheduled plan, the strikes were all set to begin on 24 June 2023.
But now the plans have changed as they are offered a new pay deal with increased payment. The Unite declared on Friday that they are calling off the strikes. According to a report by Time Out, the Unite is expecting a raise of somewhere between 15.5 per cent and 17.5 per cent.
No Need To Worry About Chaos Anymore!
Heathrow Airport is always a super bustling airport with lakhs of tourist footfall. Passengers increase by a huge extent during the summer holiday season here. And the calling off of the strike is surely news to rejoice about as there may have been some chaos and difficulties while travelling from or to here. The plan for the strikes was that Unite union members will be walking out of the airport. This had a major potential to impact the flight schedules of many airlines at Heathrow Airport.
