But now, officials are planning a massive upgrade for the site to offer a better experience for pilgrims and travellers.
₹359 Crore Project To Upgrade Pavagadh In Gujarat
The Gujarat government is now planning a ₹359 crore redevelopment project at Pavagadh. This money will be used to upgrade infrastructure at the revered Mahakali Temple and the surrounding Champaner Archaeological Park. The upgrades will help make the tourist site more accessible and, yes, more visitor-friendly.
According to NDTV, work worth ₹121 crore has already been completed under the first two phases through the Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board. The authorities working on the restoration project are focusing on improving the overall pilgrimage experience while also preserving the site’s historical and cultural significance.

New Pathway & Better Connectivity For Visitors
According to NDTV, some of the major upgrades at Pavagadh include the expansion of the Mahakali Temple premises from 545 square metres to nearly 2,980 square metres across three levels. Authorities are also working on a 3.01-km access pathway, including 2,374 steps connecting Machi Chowk to the temple, along with electrification along the route.
For safety and crowd management, there will also be CCTV surveillance and a public address system. The next phases of the project will further improve connectivity and visitor facilities. Moreover, there are also plans to enhance internal and external roads, landscaped public spaces, additional parking, bus infrastructure and more. If everything goes as planned, there will also be redevelopment of the Vada Talav precinct with gardens, a ghat, a footbridge, a children’s play area and even craft stalls.
You should know that Pavagadh Hill is home to temples, forts, gateways, mosques and even stepwells. Its structures showcase a unique and beautiful blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture. The Mahakali Temple, which sits atop the hill, draws lakhs of devotees every year and is believed to be one of the most revered Shakti Peethas.
