Janelle and Kate introduced the Internet to an off-beat method to wash potatoes, especially when you want to feed an army and have less time in hand.  In a video shared on their Insta handle, @thedailynelly, the two women empty potatoes out of three bags into the dishwasher. They gently position these potatoes into the top and bottom racks of the dishwasher.

They find this hack helpful as in their opinion it saves time. Also, they emphasise how it is difficult to fit a large number of potatoes in bowls. The person behind the camera then hilariously asks if they will also add detergent into the dishwasher. For this, one of the women clarified that detergent won’t be used in this. After placing the potatoes in the dishwasher, they first set the machine on rinse mode. In 4 minutes, the potatoes get washed, much to the delight of the content creators.

Janelle and Kate find this to be a helpful Thanksgiving and Christmas hack. But Netizens were unimpressed by this. Maria Incollingo suggests they fill up the sink with potatoes and wash them in one go. @edw714 chimes in that handwashing the veggies in the sink is much quicker. @lisas953 calls this a really gross potato-washing method. In her opinion, the residue of the dishwashing cleaning pod could contaminate the potatoes. Many others called it a ridiculous hack just to grab attention on social media. Well, the video did garner over 1 million views on social media!

Meanwhile, let’s tell you why Netizens are right in calling this hack gross. While this does seem like a time-saving hack during the festive season, here’s why it isn’t recommended by experts. Idaho Potato Commission stated to Tasting Table that even if one doesn’t put detergent in the dishwasher soap, the potatoes can still get contaminated.

Apparently, residual soap can get stuck underneath potato skins. This makes potatoes placed in the dishwasher even dirtier than when it was placed there. It beats the whole purpose! The veggies could also have an unpleasant soapy flavour to them. Also, the dirt from the potatoes can clog the dishwasher and necessarily lead to water wastage. So, don’t put potatoes in the dishwasher with the intention of saving time and energy. You’ll just end up having dirtier potatoes and a clogged dishwasher.  Rather wash them by hand and get a good pre-festive workout.

Meanwhile, have you ever tried this hack out of curiosity? Are you glad we warned you before you jump on the bandwagon?
